We see the living dead all around us all the time. People stuck in routines, too scared to make a change. People doing everything they can to make an unhealthy relationship work, because they fear being alone. People putting up with bully bosses and gossiping co-workers in a job with never-ending demands. 


People are living passion-less, direction-less, scripted lives and are feeling worth-less.


This is more than just dieting statistics and weight loss. This is a matter of life and death in every sense.


IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE THIS WAY.

BUT IT CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE, INCLUDING ME...

When I was 17 years old I gained almost 40 pounds in a summer eating and partying. When I returned to school, my volleyball coach told me to lose the weight or ride the bench. I lost the weight...

But I put it back on. 

In 1988, I finished high school after 5 successful years of basketball at 222 pounds. In the 18 months that followed, I gained 180 pounds, ballooning up to 400. I was eating 7 corn dogs for lunch with 2 litres of pop. I was hospitalized for high blood pressure, developed asthma and wanted to die. Thanks to my high school friends, I was accepted to University as a mature student, started working out and lost 130 pounds. Yes, I lost the weight...

But I put it back on. 

In 2003, I started my Masters degree at 400 pounds. From 2004 to 2006, I dropped 180 pounds and got back down to 220 pounds. Again, I lost the weight...

But I put it back on. 

This summer  past (2011) I was 290 pounds, I am now 278 pounds and I have had enough. I am 6'6" and my goal weight for 27 years was 210lbs. These last 68 pounds symbolize the final steps on the road to my biggest goal. I know it is attainable. I have help, I have a formula, I have the will and I have no excuses left. I will lose the weight and...

My journey from 400 pounds to 220 pounds

started with learning how to love myself.



400 Pounds - November 2003--------------------------------April 2004--------------------------390 Pounds - July 2004----->


I discovered three essential elements to long-term weight loss success: 1) having a meal plan and sticking to it, 2) regular exercise, and 3) journalling all the way through.

As I got leaner, fitter and stronger I found myself smiling a whole lot more :)


I competed in triathlons regularly and even came in 3rd Place once for my age group.

I would walk by friends and say “Hi” and they wouldn’t recognize me. I had to

buy a whole new wardrobe, I climbed mountains, went on fitness vacations, danced on the weekends and would run home from the club at 2:00 a.m. because,

I had still had energy to burn.


My counselling and coaching practice started to take off, I was on TV and Radio over

20 times, participated in Charity Bachelor Auctions, photo-shoots, and would run every weekend sometimes for up to 4 hours at a time.


I still remembered and stuck to my three essentials to long-term weight loss:

  1. 1. Have a meal plan and stick to it,

  2. 2. Exercise regularly,

  3. 3. Journal all the way through.

“I started abusing food at the age of five. I have not connected all the dots yet as to why.”


I have always asked myself, "Why is this wonderful person in my life?" There must be something that I am meant to learn from you Derrick, or you from me. Most recently the "answer" has become more clear to me. I am a food addict, an emotional eater (any emotion will do). I know better and I have the "answers" however, when watching one of your videos on your Facebook Page, “The Last 68 Pounds”,  and you spoke about the "script" that we play in our heads, something clicked for me.


I began to ask myself when I am eating and am not hungry what am I saying to myself (sometimes out loud and sometimes in my head). Things like, "I deserve this, I am angry. I will work it off later. This will not make me gain anymore weight. I have already screwed up so bad I might as well keep going.” or my favorite, “You will always be fat and will never reach your goal, that is just a dream".

I started abusing food at the age of 5. I have not connected all the dots yet as to why. I just want to find ways to cope with my 5-year-old-little-girl feelings once and for all. I am not that little girl anymore. My heaviest weight was 250 pounds and through a lot of hard work, I lost 107 pounds and got down to 143 pounds. But like you, I put it back on.


I am a strong, successful woman who has been through so much and it pisses me off that I can not "control" my issues with food. I am now 170 pounds and I am ready to do this work and prove to myself that food does not control me, I control the food!  I can be strong, lean and healthy like never before. I am ready. “8 years addicted to Frappuccinos X 10lbs/year = 80lbs!”


My journey with my weight started about 12 years ago; it re-started when I first came across ‘The Last 68 Pounds’ Facebook page. The first video journal came up in my newsfeed, curious to see what you had been up to, I clicked. I was blown away when I watched the video: I watched the next one, and the next, and then the next. I ‘liked’ every one, wishing there was a ‘re-ignited my resolve’ option, or a ‘holy geez man I can’t believe how honest you’re being’ option. There was something completely raw and 100% different about your video journals. I actually got a little misty!


Something in this online experience triggered me. I felt that what you were talking about- cooking good food, emotional eating, breaking through ridiculous scripts, among others topics- all resonated and combined in a way I have never heard anyone combine before. That night I made a decision- the first of several massive shifts. My patterns were full of quick fixes; Starbucks to start my day, lunch at a café, dinner as take-out, 1-3 cans of pop per day for caffeine, and only 2 servings of veggies per week (in a good week). My health and my weight deteriorated.

The night I saw your videos I decided to take a HUGE step: I ordered one last, extra sugary, full fat Frappuccino the next morning, took a picture of it, and promised myself that it was the last one. I’ve said it before, but this felt different. So far, it’s been 25 days and counting :D. Each time I felt the urge to buy one, I checked your Facebook page to remind myself of my commitment to myself.


My shift has gained momentum. I am now moving to a vegetarian diet- an enormous deal for me. I am at 9 days and counting! I’m cooking for the first time in my life. I would like a full transition to a vegan lifestyle within three months, but know it needs to be done properly. I have tried diets, weight loss programs, quick weight loss fads, Curves and even contemplated bulimia. My desperation to lose weight has taken many paths.


I am 238 pounds. I feel crummy about my health- I have 6 health issues and all of them have either been caused or made worse by horrible eating habits and lack of activity. I take too much medication for someone my age. I hurt- all the time. My body image is at an all-time low, and I have absolutely no desire to be in an intimate relationship because of this. It was a major contributing factor to the failure of my previous long-term engagement to someone I loved; I didn’t love myself. I made up a lot of excuses and let my mind run rampant with reasons as to why I ‘couldn’t’ exercise and eat well.


But guess what? I’m DONE. My first session with you has inspired me beyond words, and I am so looking forward to making a permanent shift in my life. I already know that I can. I just need support, guidance and the knowledge that the person coaching me has been through this, and will be able to provide me these things from a position of experience, not privilege.
